commodore’s Corner Pam Hauman Commodore
As we reach the dog days of August, LISSA continues its adventure through the boating season despite the fact that hot August days usually mean very little wind. But with our LISSA spirit, we forge ahead with a variety of events. Let us not forget our great events of July, a huge LISSA thank you to Larry, and Carol for their efforts at their events. We don’t always have folks like Larry and Carol to host events, so we often list events that are places that we think you and your other LISSA friends might like to attend, like the music on the Port Jefferson Ferry or meeting at the Three Village Inn. Too often, we don’t get suggestions at the Planning meetings and as I am putting the JIB together, I search various things and try to list ‘events’ that might tickle your interest. So just contact your friends and make and enjoy the night out. The 2008 Nominating Committee, Karen S., Paul A., Cliff R. and Holly L. are looking for a few good LISSA members who are willing to give of their time for the betterment of all of us. According to our bylaws, we are all expected to give some of our time to LISSA. So why not think of a Board position. If you want to be Commodore, you must have served on the Board for a year. LISSA needs you! Please consider becoming a board member and give back a little to the great group. On a related matter of LISSA members, remember, to become a member one must have two LISSA sponsors. While we would like, of course, to increase our numbers, we should be like the Marines, we want a few good members. So when someone comes up to you and asks you to sponsor them and you really don’t know them, then just say no. Encourage that person to get to know a few of us a little better before trying to become a member, starting with you. We need members who are going to participate and fit into our family. We have lots of future things coming up, the Scavenger Hunt for one; some of you maybe asking what this is all about. Let me tell you. First it is Sunday, September 14. This is always one of the most fun-filled land events that LISSA has on the calendar. You will be required to get things to bring back and also to identify things en-route. Here are some details. Teams will be comprised of 8 people, two cars of four. You can form your own teams or be assigned at the beach. Please let Cliff know if you have any requests for partners. The hunt will be limited to the Smithtown, Huntington & Islip township areas. Hagstrom Road Maps and GPS for cars can be used to get around. No personal home computers are allowed. Assemble at the beach between 12:00-12:45 PM, please don't be late. The Hunt will start at 1:00 PM sharp and end back at the beach by 4:00 PM. Food will be served after you return from the Hunt. Please get your payment to Cliff Rosenberg ASAP to insure your participation. Check payable to LISSA of course. Please do not wait to the last minute to decide to participate. We are also planning an Auction at the end of October again another fun event with Ellie, Cliff and Debbie are working on. You will get details in flyers. For those who did not see the article LI Boating, it was a very good article and hopefully we will get some interested single boaters. Now that I have again run out of room, I will end as I always do—- May you always have wind in your sails!
